Rockwell Club wins sudden death playoff, will face Makati Sports in the finals
Rockwell took a close 4-3 win in the playoff over PSPF to take on Makati Sports Club for the third time since SRAP began the team tournament format.
Each team took turns in winning their respective games a two apiece with Rockwell drawing first through a victory by Jun Paganpan over Jaime Ortua. Next was Bobby Bachmann against rival Yazdi Bagli. In another epic contest, camps from both sides involved themselves and cheered for their respective team mate. Bobby redeemed himself this time taking the match in 5-sets. PSPF ties Rockwell. The next match pitted Paolo Gomez against Ayssa Dalida. Ayssa showing so much poise simply outplayed Paolo and took the game in 3 straight sets. PSPF gains the lead at 2-1.
Next up was the ladies match between Cila Chua and Bettina Gordon. With Bettina up at 9-4 in the first set it seemed that she would cruise to another victory against her erstwhile rival. However, things turned around and Cila won 7 straight points over Bettina winning the first set. After the set, Bettina had to be treated for cramps. An injury time-out was called. Bettina decided to enter the court for the second set, trying the shake of the cramps that she said bothered her at the later part of the first set. She tried valiantly to fight it off however Cila won’t be denied. Cila takes the lead 2-0. In the third set, it was all Cila. Rockwell ties the score at 2-2.
The fifth game was again another face-off between Myca Arebado of PSPF and Ichi Reyes of Rockwell. While another 5-setter between the two was being anticipated, things didn’t turn out the way the crowd was expecting it to. Ichi was just unstoppable in this match. Making drop shots at will and confusing Myca with an array of shots she hasn’t seen from Ichi. Rockwell takes a 3-2 advantage.
With PSPF’s back against the wall, they called on their no. 1 player, Robert Garcia to play first against Ricky Espinola of Rockwell. Robert playing with a sense of urgency responded by winning over Ricky in 3 straight sets. PSPF levels the score at 3-3.
The last match featured JR Garcia against Frankie Pelino. In their last outing, play had to be stopped because Frankie accidentally got hit with a racket and be treated for stitches. Before play was stopped, Frankie was up 2 sets to 1. This was payback time for Frankie, however, JR will not be denied. JR just stepped up his play from their last outing. Frankie played valiantly but committed just a tad too many errors. In the end, JR won 3-1.
Rockwell advances to the finals and faces Makati Sports.
